The Cosmic Story: Aries New Moon 2014
Before he makes each one of us, God speaks. Then, without speaking, he takes each one out of the darkness. And these are the cloudy words God speaks before each of us begins:
“You have been sent out by your senses. Go to the farthest edge of desire, and give me clothing: burn like a great fire so that the stretched-out shadows of the things of the world cover me completely. Let everything happen to you: beauty and terror. You must just go—no feeling is the farthest you can go. Don’t let yourself be separated from me. The country called life is close. By its seriousness, you will know it. Give me your hand.”
Before He Makes Each One ~ Rainer Maria Rilke ~
With both the Sun and Moon in Aries, we really begin the new astrological year. At the Aries New Moon, we set the seeds we planted last Winter Solstice into motion. That’s what Aries is all about in some ways—motion. Where to go? What to do? The internal and eternal quest for ‘Who am I?’ Aries’ primal fire and passion move us into life. Aries sets us off on a quest as soon as we arrive at the Spring Equinox. We just intuitively know that ideas and goals we’ve been mulling over are about to move into the world. The sap rises as the spring sun warms the Earth. Life which was dormant over the winter is waking up! Aries has arrived.
All of us have Aries somewhere in our natal charts. We all have an Aries side to us; all the planetary energies are available to us. Aries is an archetypal pattern of life we share in. But how we specifically meet and use our Aries experiences will differ.
It is the energy of Mars, who astrologers consider Aries’ ‘ruler’ (the planetary energy which best exemplifies a zodiacal sign), who shapes Aries’ purpose for our use. Mars is the archetypal Warrior, and each of you will have your own unique brand of warrior depending on where your natal Mars is.
Aries is supported by the Warrior archetype, because the truth is, life itself is often a battle. We no longer live the easy life of the Garden of Eden, although we could begin to create our own earthly version if we evolve out of childish self-concern and fear into conscious community and vision. We’re smart enough, but are we emotionally mature enough? Only time will tell.
So how do we use this archetypal warrior energy that moves through all of us? At their best and brightest, warriors are the protectors and defenders of the tribe, the land and the city. Roman Mars was just that—he grappled with the problems facing communal life and defended his people when needed. We must each find our courage—an Aries trait—to become the people we are meant to evolve into. And to bring our ideas, our love and our purpose to help the larger community as we go through our collective transformation.
This New Moon is truly a new birth. It is energetically connected to the on-going Pluto-Uranus square, the womb of evolution that is presently shaking and re-shaping our planetary life. We are living in such important times—times where not only people, but the Earth herself needs defending. We all are being called upon to take an active role in shaping our future.
As Pluto pulls down the decaying structures of patriarchal society (and corporations becoming ‘people’ is the ultimate sociopathic attempt by patriarchy to hold onto power), we need new ideas, new leaders and new structures that reflect true democracy around the world to fill the void left by Pluto’s destruction. And that includes equality not only between women and men, but between feminine intuition/feeling and masculine rationality/facts. We need both sides of our brains to help solve our problems and create a more caring, open and free society.
Pluto in Capricorn is showing us that the Emperor has no clothes on. Our patriarchal emperor (Money is Power, Might makes Right) is being exposed for the fraud he is. The Emperor in the Tarot is ruled by Aries. He’s the pioneer, the discoverer, the leader, the initiator, the innovator. He has an urge for action, a sense of adventure and looks for new beginnings. While patriarchy has certainly exhibited these qualities in the past, it has become caught up in a power complex that is leading us into the dark side of the force.
When the Emperor’s powers are used for transformation and new beginnings, the effects are beneficial to all the people. But when this energy is used to preserve the status quo, structures petrify and creative expression stagnates. Authority once grounded in wisdom (because he’s married to the Empress) expresses itself as authoritarian domination (she’s dead). Patriarchy is afraid of change, and that will lead to its downfall. Evolution happens!
Each of us has a different destiny, a different calling. That’s what Aries’ energy moves us to explore. Humanity has been shaped by archetypes, opening us to many callings: Healer, Teacher, Counselor, Leader, Mother, Father, Mid-Wife, Judge, Record-Keeper, Scout, Artisan, Inventor, Scientist, Musician, Actor, Writer, Artist, Priestess, Wise Woman, Priest, Sage. Warrior. Like Jake in Avatar, our deepest wounds revolve around freedom and the disconnect between our collective reality and our deepest wishes for a peaceful, beautiful and loving life.
Since one of the duties of the warrior is to guard and defend, it would help us to learn the ways of the warrior to defend ourselves as we step into our destiny. We’ll activate our Aries energies in a big way with Uranus in Aries very close to this New Moon. Uranus is the great Awakener, the revolutionary and the mad genius of the zodiac. So throw in a bit of daredevil adventurer and you have your Aries warrior.
With Mars the warrior retrograding in Libra, the sign of the Other, we are more willing to defend the rights of others, to work on being fair and balanced and to be kind and courteous. Libra is ‘ruled’ by Venus, the feminine energy of love, wisdom and connection. This loving energy will sustain us when express ourselves. It’s easiest to find your path to self-expression when there will be love waiting for whatever you do. (Debora Geary) So let’s add a kind heart to our description as well. They make the best warriors.
As we ground in this new identity (Uranus in Aries), our warrior nature will help us challenge the powers-that-be that stand in the way of needed transformation (Pluto in Capricorn). So find your inner spiritual warrior who will guard your back and help keep you focused on your destiny. And don’t be afraid to step in and defend people, places and animals who can’t help themselves.
The Aries New Moon, birthed within the Uranus-Pluto womb, is strengthened by the addition of Jupiter in Cancer and a wide opposition from Mars. These four planets are slowly coming together to form a cardinal grand cross in the sky—a celestial call to action. Jupiter in Cancer opens our emotional bodies so we can integrate these transformative energies and find a new wholeness. Mars energizes our willpower as well as our desires, and Jupiter challenges us to include the desires of our community and our world.
So you can see why this New Moon is so potent. The energy of transformation is being seeded within each of us. Find out where Aries and Mars are in your birth chart, and it will give you a good idea of the texture and focus of this new beginning and the kind of warrior energy you carry.
The Sabian symbol for the Sun and Moon at 10* Aries is: A shining golden ring, engraved with magical symbols. This image speaks of a marriage ring which symbolizes a union with the Self—the divine spark within each of us. The magical symbols represent the archetypal laws of life which are the foundations of our own life. When we are connected to the Self, we are Self-confident, Self-possessed. We include all of ourselves into the truth of who we are and who we are here on Earth to be. Then the magic can happen.
We’ll need to live out our higher Self to take on this challenge. We are being initiated into a higher consciousness; we are birthing a new future for our world. We are the grandmothers and grandfathers of the future. Don’t be afraid to blaze new trails and think new thoughts.
Venus in Aquarius challenges Saturn in Scorpio to hold onto our high ideals and our unique gifts in relationships. Old relationship wounds need to be transformed into understanding, as our higher Mind gets activated. Our visions of the future must be grounded in our collective welfare. Saturn is part of a grand water trine, along with Jupiter in Cancer and Mercury in Pisces. Our connection to each other through this water triangle merges with the grand cross through Jupiter in Cancer. We really need to think outside the box and understand that what’s good for me is also good for you. The psychic water trine brings our emotional bodies into balance so we can handle the grand cross’ energies.
We are heading into an intense month. By mid-April, this grand cross will tighten just as we enter eclipse season. Life is picking up speed. The best thing you can do is stay centered, married to yourself, so you can open up to the energies in a conscious way. Become channels for this energy by naming it and owning it.
During April , the grand cross hits America’s 4th of July birth chart Sun square Saturn. It will ask Americans to grow up and find their true freedom. Astrologers are guessing at all the ways these energies will manifest in the culture. We cannot predict what will happen, although we can certainly imagine some of the outcomes. This will be a pivotal moment of change in some way. But since we don’t want to sit back and just be spectators, here’s an idea.
What would happen if during this month, we consciously use this energy to interact with people in a deep way by radiating who we really are. We can use the energies of this grand cross to BE an example of the best way to deal with our times. We could stop hiding our light under a bushel. Imagine how you want to BE and trust yourself to be it.
More to come in the Aries/Libra Full Moon eclipse newsletter.

SELF-PORTRAIT
It doesn’t interest me if there is one God
or many gods.
I want to know if you belong or feel
abandoned,
if you can know despair or see it in others.
I want to know
if you are prepared to live in the world
with its harsh need
to change you. If you can look back
with firm eye,
saying this is where I stand. I want to know
if you know
how to melt into that fierce heat of living,
falling toward
the center of your longing. I want to know
if you are willing
to live, day by day, with the consequence of love
and the bitter
unwanted passion of your sure defeat.
I have heard, in that fierce embrace, even
the gods speak of God.
