Are you OWNING your journey?

2021 is all about new beginnings. It doesn’t matter how 2020 treated you – good, bad, or maybe somewhere in between. 2021 can be a year of moving forward for us all. This is good news! YAY!

I read all of the comments and emails I get. I love hearing from everyone. Some of you have a list of goals a mile long. Others don’t know where to start. Wherever you are in your journey, it’s OK. You are where you are meant to be right this minute. That doesn’t mean you’re necessarily happy with everything in your current situation. The present is perfect. Even when it’s not. Because it will get you to where you most want to be.

Recently, I was asked by someone how to prepare themself for a new phase in life. They knew where they wanted to go. They were starting a side hustle that they hoped would grow into a full-time business eventually. But they were wary because they had tried before and failed miserably by falling into debt with nothing to show for it. The old crash and burn. I am a kamikaze, but my way is not for the faint of heart. You’ll need big kahunas. But the best way to avoid failure is to do your homework and make sure that your idea and business plan is viable. It’s always good to do a test market before you go ALL IN.

On the other hand, I believe failing is an opportunity to learn and grow. Failing never leaves you with nothing. It gives you valuable experience and first-hand knowledge of how you can do it better next time.

What do you need to do to prepare yourself to meet your next challenge? I’ve written about reaching goals before. My strategies are this:

  • Write your goals down.
  • Define the action steps needed for each.
  • Schedule out the steps, and when you’ll accomplish each.
  • Visualize your new life.
  • Work on your goals and visualizations every single day.

What separates those that are successful in reaching goals from those that aren’t? There could be a lot of different factors.

One is a person’s ability to stick to the daily grind. Even though you’re working on your biggest passion. Not every day or every task feels like sunshine and roses! Some days, you have to spend the whole day working on a task that you hate. We all have those tasks we hate, but we get through them. It’s about loving the process of both the good and the bad.

Another thing that separates the failures from the successes is ownership. If you want to move on to a better place in life, here are my suggestions for ownership:

  1. Take ownership of where you are now.
  2. Recognize your role in putting yourself into your current situation.
  3. LEARN from the choices you made.
  4. Make new choices.
  5. Celebrate.

There’s a chronic lack of ownership in our society. I see it so often. When something goes wrong, we have to have someone to blame. It’s easiest to blame our boss, spouse, and even blame 2020! Yet, once you own something then it doesn’t own you. And can’t be used against you, because you own it.

If you’re not happy in your relationship, consider why you started dating the person in the first place. How did the relationship evolve into what it is today? Learn from this insight before you make a plan to move on.

Or, in the case of the person that had failed at their last business venture, what caused it to fail? Was it just bad timing? Or were there things they could have done better? Did they honestly give it their all? Or are there things they would change in a do-over?

Please understand, this is NOT about finding ways that everything is all your fault. Many situations happen outside of our control. You cannot spend your life beating yourself up for past choices or past circumstances. Remind yourself that you are doing the best you can with what you know. And when you know better you do better. Let’s own it.

I’m asking you to explore how you landed where you are. Acknowledge that journey. Accept mistakes, bad luck, and bad fortune as part of your path. Once you truly own your journey – warts and all – you can make the most effective use of your time.  Improving yourself and making better choices. Freedom!

Here’s an example. A long time ago, in a galaxy far away. I spent years in a corporate job that I hated. I didn’t love the work I was doing. I didn’t like most of the people I worked with. I didn’t like the daily grind and commute. Examining my situation, I learned a few things:

  • I wanted to be doing something else – creating programs that change people’s lives. It’s my passion.
  • I wanted to be working with people that wanted to better themselves. I was tired of being surrounded by whiners and complainers.
  • I wanted to make my own hours.
Why did I take such a miserable job? It offered me the chance to learn some new skills. I’m so grateful for that knowledge that has since served me well.
  • I also acknowledged that the salary was a real draw. It helped me realize, though, that money wasn’t everything. Some things come before money.
  • And here’s my biggest lesson. All that complaining in the breakroom? I too fed the beast and got caught up in the complaint game we played. I wasn’t happy there. I’m not sure anyone was, to be honest. But the truth is I didn’t contribute to making the company better. This was a hard pill to swallow. You’re either part of the solution or the problem. I was part of the problem.

If I hadn’t fully taken ownership of where I was, I would have leaped into another corporate job…and another…and another. I would have never leaped to where I am now. YAY! Being a kamikaze pays off.

So, now I ask you to examine your pain points. Please take a deep dive into why they’re causing you pain. Acknowledge how you got there, and why you accepted it while you did. Learn from your journey.

Learn from your process and you’ll truly be ready to move forward and make your dreams come true. That is why I am so excited to share my brand-new Prosperity Upgrade Program.

  1. I’m taking a Deep breath emmmm…ahhhh!! Thanks so much Kelly that was a great read! It helped me, check in, be hostest, & refocus! I’m in the big Time “Meat” “grind” of making videos and editing and getting ready to launch my vision of what I feel is the next step in my life’s work! Thank you for my reminding me of all the reasons I’m doing this… I took your YouTube course last September and sometimes feel overwhelmed with disappointing emotions on what I’ve been able to accomplish so far. Your words reminded me to go to that flip- side of those emotions; to focus on how far I have come and how much I have done!! That feeling is now fanning the fire within me to get crackin!!
